Congratulations to our partners at NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley (formerly The Woonsocket Neighborhood Development Corporation) on breaking ground at Millrace in Woonsocket, RI last week! The event was well-attended by state and local officials, community partners as well as NEF's very own Jessica Polak and Kim Pereira.

Located on historic Main Street in downtown Woonsocket, Millrace will offer 70 units of affordable housing and commercial and community space through substantial rehabilitation of three vacant, historic mill buildings. A majority of the units (31) will be affordable to residents at or below 50% of the area median income (AMI), 11 units will be the most affordable at 30% AMI, and 15 will be at market rate. The building on Island Place was originally used as a carriage repair and blacksmith shop built around 1874, and the buildings on Main Street were constructed between 1875 and 1900, known as the Woonsocket Rubber Company Mill Complex.

Once completed, Millrace will be an admirable example of how historic, unused buildings can be converted into new, affordable homes and spaces for businesses and the community to thrive!

Watch the groundbreaking here.
